Girls Just Wanna Have Brunch (23)

A Look Back at Signature Fundraisers

for Men's and Women's Health

SGMC Health’s signature fundraising events for men’s and women’s health have once again proven to be a success, bringing the community together to support vital health initiatives. The 3rd annual Girls Just Wanna Have Brunch and Glow on the Green Golf Tournament raised funds for SGMC Health’s educational outreach programs, benefiting both women’s and men’s health.

Girls Just Wanna Have Brunch

The Girls Just Wanna Have Brunch, held in October at The McKey in Downtown Valdosta, celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a fun-filled morning featuring mimosas, a waffle bar, and a photo station. All proceeds supported initiatives for early detection, prevention, and education surrounding breast cancer. SGMC Health’s Vice President, Hilary Gibbs, expressed excitement over the event’s success, noting the lasting impact on women’s health in the community.

Glow on the Green Fore Men's Health

In March, the Glow on the Green Golf Tournament illuminated the importance of men’s health. Held at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, this glow-in-the-dark golf event raised awareness about the importance of preventive screenings and regular health checkups for men. The tournament featured a unique format with nine holes in daylight and the remaining nine played under the glow of lights. The event also included a prime rib dinner and the fan-favorite Bullseye Challenge.

Both events were a testament to the power of community involvement in raising awareness for health and well-being. With their success, SGMC Health continues to provide essential health education and screenings that directly impact the lives of individuals throughout the region.

GENEROSITY FROM WITHIN

Launching SGMC Health Cares Following Hurricane Helene

SGMC Health Cares Logo

When Hurricane Helene tore through South Georgia, it left behind a path of destruction, displacing families, damaging homes, and disrupting lives. In the face of adversity, SGMC Health remained steadfast in its mission, prioritizing the well-being of its employees and community.

In response to the storm’s impact, the organization launched SGMC Health Cares, an initiative dedicated to providing both immediate relief and long-term support for employees facing hardships.

Immediate Relief Efforts

SGMC Health responded swiftly and comprehensively to ensure its employees had the necessary resources to recover:

  • Over 4,300 cases of water distributed to those without access to clean drinking water.
  • 800 boxes of food and supplies provided to employees in need.
  • 350 bags of ice, including 150 donated by Pepsi, to help preserve food and medicine.
  • 200 bags of charcoal and lighter fluid to assist families without power in preparing meals.
  • 30 five-gallon gas cans and gas vouchers to support essential workers and first responders.
  • Hotel accommodations for 10 employees who lost their homes or needed shelter.
  • Tree removal from 12 homes, with volunteer groups clearing debris from an additional 30 properties.
  • More than 1,000 hot meals served to employees working through the crisis.
  • New washers and dryers purchased for the Lanier and Smith Northview facilities.

Recognizing the lasting financial strain caused by the hurricane, SGMC Health implemented additional measures to ease the burden on employees. A Hurricane Recovery Payout was established to provide direct financial assistance to those most affected. Additionally, employees were given the option to cash out PTO to help cover unexpected expenses as they rebuilt their lives.

In Lanier County, one of the hardest-hit areas, SGMC Health partnered with Miller County Hospital and Kings BBQ Team to provide more than 600 hot meals and a community food drive for families struggling in the storm’s aftermath. This effort ensured that not only SGMC Health employees but also the broader community had access to nourishment and essential supplies during a critical time.

What began as a disaster response has since evolved into a lasting commitment to supporting employees in times of crisis. In 2024 alone, SGMC Health Cares provided assistance to over 200 employees, distributing more than $200,000 in aid to those facing personal hardships. Whether responding to natural disasters or individual emergencies, SGMC Health continues to stand by its employees when they need it most.

The spirit of SGMC Health is reflected not only in the care provided within its hospitals but also in the unwavering support extended to its employees and the community. SGMC Health Cares is a testament to the strength, resilience, and compassion that define the organization.

A Culture of Giving

The “Give Where You Live” campaign took employee giving to the next level, increasing participation by 10% compared to last year. The campaign wasn’t just about fundraising. It was about connection. SGMC Health Foundation team members traveled to each campus, sharing stories of impact, highlighting urgent needs, and encouraging employees to invest in the future of their healthcare system.

The results speak volumes. Employees rallied around the initiative, demonstrating their unwavering support for SGMC Health’s mission. Their gifts were directed toward specific campuses, programs, and the Care Share Fund, which provides financial assistance to colleagues facing unexpected crises. This deep-rooted culture of generosity reflects a workforce that doesn’t just serve South Georgia. They are truly invested in its well-being.

Beyond the Workplace

SGMC Health employees are known for their compassion, both inside and outside hospital walls. Whether volunteering at local non-profits, supporting community initiatives, or participating in fundraising events, their dedication to service is evident in all they do. Their support of the SGMC Health Foundation ensures that resources remain available for patients, facilities, and coworkers in need.

As SGMC Health continues to lead in exceptional patient care, the generosity of its employees plays an essential role in shaping a stronger, healthier community. Their commitment to giving back is not just a tradition. It’s a testament to the heart and soul of SGMC Health.

In 2024, they proved once again that when we come together, we can achieve remarkable things. And this is only the beginning.

SGMC Health Physicians Giving Back in a Big Way

In the fast-paced world of healthcare, where physicians dedicate their lives to healing, SGMC Health is celebrating those who go beyond the call of duty in their commitment to the community. Enter the Blazin’ 100, an innovative campaign designed to honor physicians who give back in a meaningful way.

A Movement Fueled by Compassion

These medical professionals are not only treating patients but also investing in the future of healthcare for South Georgia through their generous gifts.

Physicians who contribute between $100-$500 annually earn the prestigious title of Blazin’ Doc, while those who take their commitment a step further by donating $1,200 or more are recognized as Trailblazin’ Docs. As a token of appreciation, all contributors receive a custom lapel pin, a symbol of their dedication to both medicine and philanthropy.

Taking It to the Next Level: Super Blazin’ Docs

In 2024, the campaign reached new heights with the introduction of Super Blazin’ Docs, physicians who pledge $2,600 or more annually to support SGMC Health’s healing mission. These top-tier donors exemplify the spirit of giving, ensuring that SGMC Health continues to provide cutting-edge care, innovative treatments, and resources to the community.

Serving with Purpose:

The Dedication of SGMC Health Volunteers

The Volunteer Auxiliary at SGMC Health continues to be a cornerstone of compassion and service, playing an essential role in supporting patients, visitors, and healthcare staff. Known as the Pink Ladies and Red Coats, these dedicated volunteers generously give their time and talents to enhance the hospital experience for all who walk through SGMC Health’s doors.

In 2024, the Volunteer Auxiliary welcomed 11 new members, further strengthening its impact within the health system. Collectively, 34 volunteers contributed over 3,000 hours of service throughout the year, bringing the total to an incredible 1.6 million hours since the program’s inception. Their unwavering commitment extends beyond the hospital walls and into the broader community, reflecting SGMC Health’s mission of compassionate care.

Community involvement was a high priority for the Auxiliary in 2024. They proudly sponsored a team for the Miracle League of Valdosta and supported the Boys and Girls Club with a generous $4,000 donation. Their fundraising efforts were equally impressive, as they raised $8,000 to benefit the SGMC Health Foundation. Throughout the year, they organized several successful fundraisers, selling uniforms, jewelry, accessories, flowers, and more to generate support for various healthcare initiatives.

The Volunteer Auxiliary also upholds cherished traditions that bring joy to patients and families. Each year, they celebrate the first baby born at SGMC Health with a special gift basket, and during the holiday season, they lovingly crochet hats and create festive stockings for babies born during the week of Christmas. These heartfelt gestures serve as a reminder of the warmth and kindness that define the Auxiliary’s service.

“SGMC Health’s Volunteer Auxiliary is a true testament to the power of community service,” said Hilary Willis, Director of Development and Volunteer Engagement. “Their dedication not only enhances the hospital experience but also fosters a spirit of generosity and care that extends far beyond our walls.”

With every hour volunteered, every fundraiser held, and every act of kindness shared, the SGMC Health Volunteer Auxiliary continues to make a profound difference in the lives of many, ensuring that care, compassion, and community remain at the heart of SGMC Health’s mission.

Inspiring Future Healthcare Leaders

Last summer, SGMC Health welcomed a new wave of young talent through its Volunteen Summer Program, bringing together 43 bright and ambitious high school students eager to explore the fast-paced, rewarding world of healthcare. Over six weeks, these students gained invaluable exposure to different facets of healthcare, igniting their passion for medicine and community service.

From assisting in patient care areas to shadowing professionals in critical departments, the Volunteen program provided a behind-the-scenes look at hospital operations. Students were placed in departments such as nursing, administration, and imaging, where they engaged with medical staff, observed complex procedures, and developed essential skills in communication, teamwork, and professionalism.

A Summer of Discovery and Growth

Volunteens-2 (1)

Hilary Willis, SGMC Health’s Director of Development and Volunteer Services, reflected on the program’s impact. “This program not only offered these young people a glimpse into the world of healthcare but also gave them the chance to make a positive impact on their community," she shared. "Their energy and enthusiasm brought fresh perspectives, and we are proud to have supported their growth and development."

Each student’s journey in the Volunteen program was unique, with experiences that helped shape their future aspirations.

Ayesha Patel, a senior at Lowndes High School, spent her summer exploring the inner workings of the hospital pharmacy.

Ayesha dreams of pursuing biomedical engineering or pre-med, and her time at SGMC Health provided invaluable insight into the industry.

For Amori Brooks, a junior at Lowndes High, the hospital’s dynamic atmosphere was an exciting introduction to the medical field.

Initially set on a career in pediatrics, her experience in the pulmonary department broadened her perspective, leading her to consider a future as a respiratory therapist.

A Lasting Impact

Brenda Alexander, Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, acknowledged the program’s long-term benefits. “By working alongside our dedicated professionals, these students may have discovered a love for healthcare that could inspire them to pursue a career in this vital field. We were excited to see the positive impact they made over the summer and look forward to the potential future healthcare leaders emerging from this program.”

With a combined 1,820 volunteer hours dedicated to SGMC Health, last year’s group of Volunteens left an undeniable mark. Their willingness to serve, learn, and contribute embodied the spirit of community and the future of healthcare. SGMC Health is proud to have played a role in shaping these young minds and looks forward to continuing this impactful program in the coming years.

The Extra Mile:

SGMC Health’s Hospitality Services

Make Hospital Visits Easier

As SGMC Health embarked on a transformative expansion of its main campus, the organization remained steadfast in its commitment to patient comfort and convenience. With construction came temporary inconveniences: closed entrances, relocated parking, and a shift in familiar pathways. Rather than allowing these challenges to impact the patient experience, SGMC Health turned them into an opportunity for enhancement. The solution? The launch of a formal Hospitality Services department, dedicated to ensuring that every visitor, patient, and guest feels at ease the moment they arrive.

A Guiding Hand in a Time of Change

Hospital visits can be overwhelming, especially when navigating a hospital undergoing construction. Recognizing this, SGMC Health Hospitality Services introduced a team of dedicated professionals to provide personalized assistance. Stationed at the main entrance’s information desk, they are the first friendly faces patients and visitors encounter, ready with warm smiles, clear directions, and an unwavering commitment to hospitality. Whether it’s offering wayfinding support or answering questions, their presence transforms what could be a stressful journey into a seamless experience.

To further enhance accessibility, SGMC Health made a strategic investment in color-coded wheelchairs assigned to different areas of the hospital. While these are practical additions, they’re also a symbol of the hospital’s attention to detail, ensuring that mobility support is always available exactly where it’s needed.

Bringing Comfort to Every Corner

While the expansion meant shifting parking locations, SGMC Health Hospitality Services took proactive steps to bridge the gap. A fleet of golf carts now offers courtesy rides from parking lots to hospital entrances, ensuring that no patient or visitor has to make a long trek on foot. These courtesy carts have quickly become a favorite, offering both convenience and a touch of warmth to those arriving at the facility.

Valet services have also been integrated into the Hospitality Services team, providing a stress-free parking solution. No longer do patients need to worry about finding a spot or walking long distances. SGMC Health has made it as effortless as possible.

For those approaching the hospital’s main entrance, the newly established security checkpoint near the ER adds another layer of support. Designed to assist with navigation, these checkpoints serve as both a safety measure and a helpful resource, ensuring patients and guests find their way without confusion.

A Commitment to Excellence

At the heart of SGMC Health Hospitality Services is a simple but powerful missionto create a welcoming, supportive, and hassle-free experience for everyone who walks through the hospital doors. Whether it’s providing clear directions, offering a wheelchair, or escorting a patient to their destination, this team goes above and beyond to make each visit as smooth as possible.

In the midst of expansion, SGMC Health is proving that growth doesn’t have to come at the expense of patient experience. Rather, it’s an opportunity to raise the bar even higherWith their unwavering commitment to service, the Hospitality Services team is ensuring that every guest feels at home, no matter where their healthcare journey takes them.

Stories of Impact

Berrien

Empowering Women Through Early Detection

In a steadfast commitment to women’s health, SGMC Health’s Breast Center took a significant step during Breast Cancer Awareness Month by providing 125 free 3-D mammogram screenings to uninsured women with financial need. This initiative, made possible through the SGMC Health Foundation, aimed to ensure that women in South Georgia had access to essential breast cancer screenings, reinforcing SGMC Health’s mission to promote early detection and proactive care.

The screenings were conducted at both the SGMC Imaging Center in Valdosta and SGMC Health Berrien in Nashville, reaching women across Lowndes, Berrien, Lanier, Cook, Atkinson, and Irwin counties. Eligible applicants were able to schedule their screenings through an easy online process, eliminating barriers to care and encouraging participation in this vital health initiative.

The Power of Early Detection

Breast cancer remains the second most common cancer among women in the U.S., affecting 1 in 8 women over their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. Although advances in screening and treatment have significantly reduced mortality rates, early detection remains a key factor in successful outcomes.

SGMC Health employs Genius™ 3D Mammography™ technology, developed by Hologic, Inc., to enhance breast cancer detection while minimizing the need for follow-up testing. This advanced imaging technology provides a more detailed view of breast tissue, improving accuracy in diagnosing abnormalities.

Hilary Gibbs, Vice President of Support Services and Chief Development Officer at SGMC Health, emphasized the profound impact of community support in making this initiative a reality.

"We are deeply grateful to our donors whose generosity makes it possible for us to expand and enhance the services we provide," Gibbs stated. "By investing in the health of women in our region, we ensure that they receive the care they deserve close to home, promoting healthier families and stronger communities."

Breaking Down Barriers to Care

Imaging-Center-scaled

The free screenings targeted women 40 years and older who had not undergone a mammogram in the past year, were uninsured, and demonstrated financial need. By covering the cost of these 3-D mammograms, SGMC Health helped bridge the gap for women who might otherwise forgo this essential screening due to financial constraints.

Through its ongoing commitment to community health and early detection, SGMC Health continues to play a pivotal role in the fight against breast cancer. By providing access to cutting-edge technology and compassionate care, the health system is ensuring that more women have the opportunity to detect breast cancer early when it is most treatable.

Scholarships That Shape the Future

The SGMC Foundation proudly invests in the future workforce of healthcare professionals by providing scholarships to deserving students in the region.

  • The Jay Shaw Scholarship was established in 2016 in memory of the late State Representative Jay Shaw. Mr. Shaw was a champion for rural healthcare, and advocate for the advancement of healthcare in South Georgia during his 18 years of service in the General Assembly. Since its inception, the Jay Shaw Scholarship has provided more than $50,000 in scholarships to Lakeland high school seniors pursuing a career in the healthcare field.
  • The SGMC Health Foundation Scholarship was established in 2023 to provide scholarships to Valdosta High School, Valdosta Early College Academy, and Lowndes High School seniors seeking to pursue a career in the field of healthcare. The SGMC Health Scholarship exists to alleviate some of the financial burden of higher education in order to help create a future for healthcare students in South Georgia.
  • The Copeland Smart Start Scholarship was created in 2022 in partnership with Wiregrass Technical College to award postgraduate scholarships to the recipients of the Ben and LaVonne Copeland, Sr. Wiregrass LPN to RN Scholarship who become employed by SGMC as full-time RNs upon graduation. This scholarship was created out of a desire to assist SGMC in meeting the growing demands of the nursing workforce.

Emily Ann Livingston was a recipient of the Jay Shaw Scholarship in 2023. She is a Lakeland native and hopes to return back to her hometown after Pharmacy school. Emily Ann graduated from Lanier County High School and is currently a Biology Major at Valdosta State University.

“The Jay Shaw Scholarship has been a blessing," she said. "Receiving this scholarship has been a transformative experience, providing me with the financial support and confidence to pursue my academic goals without the burden of financial stress. I am deeply grateful for the investment in my future and am committed to giving back to my community as a result.

Investing in Cutting-Edge Cardiac Technology

In the fast-paced world of healthcare, technology is often the difference between a routine visit and a life-saving diagnosis. This year, SGMC Health took a giant leap forward in cardiac care with the addition of a Philips EPIQ CVx cardiac ultrasound machine at SGMC Health Smith Northview, setting a new standard for how heart conditions are diagnosed and managed.

For patients experiencing chest pain or shortness of breath, every moment counts. Echocardiography is often the first step in uncovering the underlying cause, and for years, this non-invasive procedure has been a cornerstone of cardiac imaging. But with the aging population and an increasing number of long-term health conditions, the demand for these exams has surged. That’s where SGMC Health’s latest investment comes in: an advanced machine designed not only to meet but exceed the growing need for precision in cardiac diagnostics.

The Philips EPIQ CVx is a game-changer. With its higher processing power and stunning imaging capabilities, it helps healthcare providers deliver faster, more accurate diagnoses, ensuring that patients receive the right care at the right time. This means fewer tests, shorter hospital stays, and most importantly, better outcomes for patients across the region.

Tom Gonzalez, Echo Lab Supervisor at SGMC Health, couldn’t be more excited about the impact the new technology will have. “We are so grateful to the SGMC Health Foundation for funding this modern equipment for our team and the patients we serve,” he says.

“This technology will provide exceptional image quality and enhanced data that can change patient outcomes and shorten a patient’s length of stay.”

For the SGMC Health Foundation, investing in state-of-the-art equipment is about more than just keeping up with the times. It’s about ensuring that the health system remains on the cutting edge of innovation, delivering extraordinary care to every patient. Hayden Hancock, Chair of the SGMC Health Foundation Board, emphasizes the importance of this investment: “Funding important priorities such as this ensures that SGMC Health stays at the forefront of healthcare innovation and provides extraordinary care to our patients.”

The new cardiac ultrasound machine is one of two recently introduced into the SGMC Health system. The other is located at the Dasher Heart Center on the main campus, further expanding access to life-saving technology. Together, these machines are enhancing SGMC Health’s ability to provide comprehensive cardiac care and reaffirming the health system’s commitment to improving health outcomes for all patients.

For those facing heart-related concerns, this state-of-the-art equipment is more than just a piece of technology. It represents a promise that every patient who walks through SGMC Health’s doors will receive the highest quality care, powered by the latest advancements in medical technology.

Enhancing Safety with New Medication IV Pumps

In a move that marked a significant milestone in the enhancement of patient safety and care, SGMC Health added 41 new Med Syringe Pumps in 2024. Thanks to the generous support of the SGMC Health Foundation, these state-of-the-art pumps replaced aging units across SGMC Health’s facilities, improving medication delivery across its Intensive Care Units (ICU) and further advancing the system's commitment to excellence.

The investment, made possible by the Foundation’s ongoing dedication to improving healthcare in the region, has had a direct impact on patient safety. By funding the new syringe pumps, the Foundation ensured that SGMC Health could continue its mission to deliver the highest standard of care while addressing the evolving needs of critical care settings.

“These advanced pumps have significantly enhanced the way our teams deliver care,” said Travis Grassley, Administrative Director of Pulmonary and Neurosciences at SGMC Health. “With their customizable drug libraries, intuitive interfaces, and built-in safety features, we’ve been able to reduce the risk of medication errors and streamline the administration process. This technology gives our clinicians the tools to provide treatments with greater precision and confidence.”

SGMC Health’s ability to invest in cutting-edge medical technology is a direct result of philanthropic support. By harnessing the power of community giving, the health system continues to push the boundaries of patient care, ensuring that every advancement reflects its unwavering dedication to excellence.

With each initiative, SGMC Health reaffirms its mission to provide top-tier care and meet the evolving needs of its patients.

The Tree House Thrift Shop’s Impact on Hospice Care

Tucked away in the heart of Valdosta, The Tree House Thrift Shop is more than just a place to find gently used treasures; it’s a lifeline for those in need of compassionate end-of-life care. As the primary fundraising arm for Hospice of South Georgia (HOSG), The Tree House is a testament to the power of community-driven support.

In 2024, the thrift shop presented an impressive $115,000 contribution to HOSG, a sum raised over the past year through its sales of donated clothing, furniture, and home goods. This funding ensures that HOSG, the only not-for-profit hospice in Valdosta, can continue providing care to patients regardless of their financial situation.

Since its founding in 2013, The Tree House has contributed over $700,000 to HOSG, reinforcing its vital role in the community. The shop operates through a dedicated team of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to curate an ever-changing inventory, offering shoppers both quality and affordability. Each purchase, each donation, and each hour volunteered directly translates into meaningful support for those facing chronic and life-limiting illnesses.

Amanda Mason, Director of HOSG, emphasized the impact of these contributions, stating, “Every dollar raised helps us extend care to patients and families during some of the most challenging times in their lives. We are deeply thankful to everyone who made this achievement possible.”

The funds raised will enhance a variety of essential services, including in-home palliative care, grief counseling, and specialized hospice programs designed to uphold the dignity and comfort of patients. As Mason explains, “Palliative and hospice care go beyond medical treatment. It’s about supporting patients holistically by offering physical, emotional, and spiritual care to help them and their families find peace and meaningful moments together.”

Located at 418 Northside Drive, The Tree House Thrift Shop welcomes community members to shop, donate, or volunteer. Large donations can even be picked up for free, making it easy for locals to give back.

For those looking to make a difference, The Tree House offers a unique opportunity: every item purchased is a step toward ensuring that those in need receive the care and compassion they deserve.
