Building an Unparalleled Workplace

At SGMC Health, our mission extends beyond providing exceptional care to our patients. We are also dedicated to fostering an environment where our employees feel valued, supported, and empowered. As we entered the new fiscal year 2025, a new strategic priority to be an unparalleled place to work emerged. The goal being to ensuring our team members experience a workplace that prioritizes their well-being, rewards their contributions, and supports them in times of need.

Over the past year, SGMC Health has implemented meaningful initiatives to enhance the employee experience. Our Merit Plus program rewards employees financially when we achieve our fiscal year goals, demonstrating our commitment to recognizing the hard work and dedication of our team. Additionally, we introduced the Merit Plus Wellness program to encourage and support the health and well-being of our employees.

We understand that challenges can arise unexpectedly, which is why we provide resources to help employees during difficult times. The SGMC Health Foundation Care Share Fund offers financial support to team members facing extraordinary circumstances. This past year, when our community was hit with Hurricane Helene, we worked together with our leadership team and the SGMC Health Foundation to provide assistance to our employees.

Celebrating and appreciating our workforce is a priority. We host yearly employee appreciation days, including Nurses Week and Hospital Week, to recognize the dedication of our healthcare professionals. We also bring employees and their families together through engaging events such as Trunk or Treat, our annual Holiday Celebration, and Touch-A-Truck, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.

As we move forward, SGMC Health remains committed to investing in our people, because when we take care of our employees, they can continue providing the highest level of care to our community. Together, we are building a workplace that is truly unparalleled.

Excellence in Care Awards

We are proud to recognize our remarkable providers with The Excellence in Care Award, a recognition program that honors the compassionate care and clinical excellence our providers bring to their patients every day. Throughout the year, you may nominate a physician for The Excellence in Care Award. This physician’s clinical skill and especially her/his compassionate care exemplify the kind of doctor that our patients, their families, and our staff recognize as an outstanding role model.

Excellence in Care Award Winner Dr. Pisula 2024

October 2024
Brian Pisula, MD
Emergency Medicine

When a family came into the SGMC Health Main emergency room with their three-month-old son who was extremely lethargic, Dr. Pisula went beyond basic tests to find the cause. Instead of sending them home when nothing obvious was wrong, he ordered a CT scan, which revealed hydrocephalus. He took the time to explain the diagnosis, comfort the parents, and arranged an urgent transfer to Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital. He even followed up to ensure they arrived safely. In the words of the patient's mother, "He truly saved my son's life and I will forever be grateful for him".

Nurses Week Campaign

During Nurses Week 2024, SGMC Health honored the dedication and expertise of our nursing team by highlighting the profound impact they have on patient care. As a special tribute, our physicians took the time to recognize and celebrate the nurses they work alongside every day, expressing their deep appreciation for their skill, compassion, and commitment.

Nurses are the backbone of healthcare, and their collaboration with physicians is essential in delivering the highest quality care to our community. Watch the video to hear directly from our physicians as they share their gratitude for the incredible nurses of SGMC Health.

DAISY Awards

The DAISY Award is a recognition program to celebrate and recognize nurses by collecting nominations from patients, families, and co-workers. DAISY awards are presented monthly in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate commending them for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” They also receive a beautiful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. A special floral arrangement of daisies are generously donated by The Flower Gallery, the local sponsor of SGMC Health's DAISY Award.

BEE Award

The BEE Award is presented monthly to recognize non-nursing staff members, including patient care technicians, nursing assistants, and medical assistants, who exemplify extraordinary dedication, teamwork, and compassion in supporting the nursing staff. Nomination criteria include qualities like leadership, attitude, and clinical skills. Each honoree is presented with a certificate, balloons, a special bee pin, and a gift bag.

Safe Care Award

The Safe Care Award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond in advancing SGMC Health’s culture of safety and excellence. As the organization continues its journey to becoming a High Reliability Organization (HRO), this recognition underscores the importance of vigilance, teamwork, and adherence to best practices in patient care. Nominations for the Safe Care Award can be submitted by patients, family members, colleagues, or leaders.

Service Awards

In October 2024, we had the honor of celebrating our extraordinary employees who reached milestone anniversaries between September 2023 and September 2024.

To recognize their years of service, we hosted our annual Service Awards Dinner at the Rainwater Conference Center, where we honored team members marking 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 years of commitment to SGMC Health, Hospice of South Georgia, and Langdale Place.

We are grateful for their hard work, passion, and dedication—their contributions make a lasting impact and inspire us all!
