Teaching, Training, and Transforming Care

At SGMC Health, medical education is immersive—taking shape through hands‑on patient care, advanced simulation, and real‑world clinical experience.

As South Georgia’s largest academic medical center, SGMC Health plays a vital role in preparing the next generation of physicians while strengthening access to high‑quality care for the region.

That mission is anchored in a longstanding partnership with Mercer University School of Medicine, developed to help address physician shortages and improve health outcomes in rural and underserved communities across Georgia.

Through this collaboration, SGMC Health serves as a third- and fourth‑year clinical campus for Mercer medical students, offering immersive, hands‑on training in real‑world healthcare settings.

Medical students rotate through a wide range of specialties, working alongside experienced physicians who are deeply invested in teaching. This close mentorship model allows students to sharpen clinical skills, gain confidence, and understand the nuances of patient‑centered care—often in the same communities they may one day serve.

Beyond medical student education, SGMC Health’s commitment to training physicians continues through its three residency programs: Internal Medicine, Transitional Year, and Family Medicine.

These programs are designed to provide broad, comprehensive clinical experience while emphasizing compassionate, community‑focused care. Residents train across inpatient and outpatient settings, developing the expertise needed to meet the evolving healthcare needs of South Georgia.

Supporting this education is SGMC Health’s state‑of‑the‑art simulation lab, where learners practice procedures, clinical decision‑making, and team‑based care in a controlled, high‑fidelity environment. Simulation allows students and residents to learn, practice, and refine skills before applying them in patient care—enhancing both confidence and safety.

Equally important is the faculty behind the training. SGMC Health’s dedicated physicians and educators bring deep clinical expertise and a passion for teaching, guiding learners through every stage of their medical journey. Their commitment ensures that education at SGMC Health is rigorous, supportive, and closely aligned with the realities of modern healthcare.

Together, these programs reflect SGMC Health’s role not only as a place of healing, but as a place of learning—where today’s students and residents become tomorrow’s physicians, equipped to care for patients and communities across South Georgia and beyond.

Recognition at SGMC Health is designed to capture both the extraordinary moments and the everyday actions that shape patient care and teamwork.

Through a mix of formal awards and real‑time appreciation, employees across the system are recognized in ways that are visible, timely, and meaningful.

Signature programs such as the DAISY Award, BEE Award, Health System Hero, Safe Care Award, and Excellence in Care Provider Award honor individuals and teams whose actions reflect clinical excellence, safety, compassion, and service across every role.

These awards are fueled by nominations from patients, families, peers, and leaders, bringing real stories of impact to the forefront.

In response to employee feedback, SGMC Health also expanded recognition beyond formal moments with the launch of Motivosity, a systemwide platform that allows peers and leaders to share appreciation in real time.

Thousands of recognitions exchanged through Motivosity highlight the daily wins that might otherwise go unseen, reinforcing that consistency and visibility matter just as much as milestone awards.

Recognition comes together each spring during Health System Week, a flagship celebration that unites employees across campuses and clinics through shared experiences, appreciation events, and leadership engagement.

Throughout the year, profession‑based and department recognition weeks continue that momentum, ensuring teams feel valued well beyond a single moment.
