Today, that responsibility has grown—and so has the need for a new kind of Emergency Department. 

Why a New Emergency Department?

Emergency care is changing and demand is rising.

  • SGMC Health supports care for 400,000+ patients annually
  • Emergency visits now exceed 100,000 each year
  • Transfers from regional hospitals have more than doubled

As a regional referral center for trauma, stroke, and cardiac emergencies, SGMC Health is caring for more high-acuity patients than ever before.

This growth reflects trust—but it also creates strain on a facility not designed for today’s demand.

Designed for Today—and the Future

The new Emergency Department is purpose-built to improve access, flow, and care delivery. As part of the Main Campus expansion, this new facility will:

  • Increase overall capacity

  • Improve patient movement through the ER
  • Support more efficient, specialized care pathways

This isn’t just a larger space—it’s a smarter model of care.

What Will Be Different

  • More Treatment Rooms: Expanded capacity allows more patients to be seen and treated more quickly.

  • Fast Track / Express Care: A dedicated area for non-life-threatening conditions—designed to reduce wait times.

  • Behavioral Health Space: A specialized care environment to better support behavioral health patients safely and appropriately.

  • Observation Unit: Short-term monitoring spaces reduce ER crowding and improve throughput.

  • Trauma-Ready Design: Strengthens SGMC Health’s role as a Level III Trauma Center, ensuring rapid care for critical patients.

This investment is also about improving how care is delivered. The new environment will:

A Stronger Safety Net for Our Region

SGMC Health remains a destination for advanced care, including:

  • Level III Trauma Center
  • Level I Emergency Cardiac Care Center
  • Primary Stroke Center

The new Emergency Department ensures these services remain accessible—close to home.

Looking Ahead

Opening in January 2027, the new Emergency Department represents a major step forward in access, capacity, and care delivery.
