Frequently Asked Questions

What is a primary care provider?

Primary care providers coordinate all aspects of your health care, including both physical and mental health.  They listen to your questions, assess symptoms, recommend treatment approaches, prescribe medication, and refer you to the proper specialist when needed.

Why do I need a primary care provider?

It's important to have a primary care physician because they get to know you, your medical history and your family health history. Building a long-term relationship with your provider can lead to major health benefits over your lifetime, such as lower overall health costs, a decrease in hospital and ER visits, and better management of chronic diseases. PCPs are also able to refer you to the correct specialists in the region's most comprehensive specialty network.

What's the difference between a family medicine and internal medicine physician?

An internal medicine physician cares for adults. A family medicine physician is both a pediatrician and an internal medicine doctor combined into one specialty. They care for both children and adults.

How do I choose a primary care provider?

There are a number of factors to consider when selecting your primary care physician. Get opinions from people you trust such as family, friends, and co-workers. Check your health insurance plan to find out what physicians are in-network. Consider your own preferences for office location, office hours, and ease of scheduling.

Most importantly, your primary care physician should be someone you trust – someone who listens to you and makes you feel comfortable when talking about your health issues."

How often should I have an appointment with my provider?

You should see your provider once a year to maintain your health. At this appointment, your provider will conduct an annual wellness exam and ask you questions about your health. Additional appointments may be needed if any conditions, symptoms, or needs arise.

Where can I go if my primary care provider is not available (i.e. after hours or on the weekend)?

SGMC Urgent Care provides quality, immediate walk-in care for patients of all ages every day from 9am-8pm. Urgent Care can treat any non-emergent, minor injuries and illnesses, including flu, urinary tract infections, strains and sprains, rashes, minor fractures, and sore throats.

What if I don't have health insurance?

For the uninsured, Partnership Health Center provides low-cost primary and walk-in urgent care. https://www.phcvaldosta.org/
